NEW DELHIpotofgoldvideopokermachine, July 30 (Xinhua) -- Around 10 persons died and more than 20 were injured after multiple landslides hit the Wayanad area of India's southern state Kerala amid heavy rains early on Tuesday morning, confirmed a local police officer to Xinhua over phone.

The landslides struck in the Meppadi area even as people were still asleep. Rescue work was on, though heavy rains were causing a disruption, added the officer.

According to the officer, at least three landslides hit the area at around 02potofgoldvideopokermachine:00 a.m. local time.

"We have recovered around 10 bodies so far, and sent more than 20 injured people to a local hospital. Rescue work is continuing. Heavy rains are playing havoc, disrupting the rescue work. The locals say that more than 50 people are still trapped under the debris," said the local police.

Meanwhile, media reports suggested that the death toll was feared to rise as many people were still trapped under the rubble, and that it seemed to be a "massive tragedy."

"250 members of Fire and Rescue, Civil Defence, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Local Emergency Response Team (LERT) are involved in the rescue operation in Wayanad. An additional team of NDRF has been directed to reach the spot immediately," said a post by news agency ANI on X.

Besides the loss of human lives, hundreds of vehicles, houses and other properties were also stuck under the rubble of the landslides, added the local media reports.
